Amazon – $1300 in first month

Thanks, Amazon I made approximately $1300 in my first month of selling on Amazon. That’s for about 70 books, and after expenses I netted about $1000. Pretty good for a bunch of books that were just sitting around, likely never to be read again.

I’ve blogged before about what sells for me and what doesn’t. Today, as I was fired up to list a couple more boxes of books, I took the time to look at Amazon’s "Promerchant" account. Darn! I would have saved about $50 on my listing fees if I’d have signed up at the beginning. That’s because Amazon drops the $1 listing fee for each book if you have the premium account. The account costs $20 per month for two months, then $40.

So, my first month would’ve made me $70-$20=$50. I’ll see how my volume looks after the first couple months. If it is below 40 a month, I’ll drop the pro account. For now, it is a sweet deal.

  1. That’s extremely impressive. Did you find that certain books sold better than others? I have quite a few books that I should probably sell. Maybe this is the motivation that I need.

  2. LAMoneyGuy, mostly what I’m after with my Amazon experiment is some cash and a bit of knowledge about shipping, packaging and accounting. But I have learned a few things about the types of books which seem to sell more readily.

    I detail them here:

Basically, anything but mass paperbacks sells pretty well. If the item is bid down to under two bucks, forget it.

I get the most money and the quickest sales from up to four year old computer books, DVDs and language books.

  3. Great idea – i m going to try it myself – thanks
