Jump for joyWe got back from vacation last week, and plunged back into our normal lives. That was the last long road trip I think I’ll ever take.

Not that the kids were bad, they were astonishingly good for being cramped up in a van for five days. It is simply that 1) I hate driving. Not really, what I hate is being bored. 2) I dislike road food. 3) It really didn’t save us any money at all. All together, raw travel costs were:

  • Van: $485 (A great deal for unlimited miles, we used 3800 miles!)
  • Gas: $550
  • Hotels: $220
  • Meals on the road: $300
  • Total: $1,555
  • Total if we’d flown: $1500-$1650
Bonus if we’d flown: +3 days of useful vacation

Still, it was important to do a long road trip at least once with the family. Childhood memories and all that. All the rest of the childhood vacation memories are simply going to involve planes!
