Jobsearch – not so bad

window blocks Jobsearch not so badLooking for a job isn’t so bad. The job market for programmers in Oregon is really very hot right now.

I had my resume updated already, of course. Once I let anyone know I was officially looking, the phone started ringing off the hook. Being connected up via LinkedIn helps with the searching as well.

I had my first phone interview yesterday, for an interesting R&D position at a startup. I’m going to have a half-day in-person interview on Monday. It feels great to get such traction so quickly, but this time I really don’t need to leap immediately. My layoff date is May 1, so I have plenty of time to look for a job which will really fit me. Plus, I have enough money in the emergency fund to carry me for a couple months. I’d rather not use it, but I will if need be.

That’s almost a first for me, and it is causing me to "raise the bar" of acceptability for jobs. I am a very good interviewee, once I get to the in-person stage, I am almost always offered the job. My challenge this time will be to negotiate for pay and benefits from a position of calm strength, and to stick to my guns about the kind of job I want to take this time.
