Fearless Money

Big news this week for me. My day-job company just lost more than half its business on one day. Two major clients went with another agency. It is a company of only 150 people, and we’re looking at major layoffs.

The current plan is to layoff or lose through “attrition” 50-60 people. Ouch. I’m one of the newer people on my team, I’ve only been there for a year and a half. Also, I’m not sure, but my guess is that I make a good bit more than the average for the company. Many of my coworkers are certain they’d never get rid of me, but I am not so sure. Perhaps it is because of my experience of 2 layoffs in the past, but I just don’t see any job as safe, especially not in this environment.

They are giving severance for people who stick around long enough to be let go. For me that would only be a week and a half of pay. So, I am having a dilemma. I could be looking for a new job, but I really don’t want one. I like my current job, which I can do with no real slop-over into my personal time. I am using that personal time to develop my new online business. If I change jobs, I will surely set back the launch of my business by weeks or months.

So, that’s why I haven’t been posting much this week. I am working like mad to launch now, and to start getting some traction right away. Maybe, just maybe, it will be enough that I won’t have to find a new job at all.

What I’m really hoping

I guess what I’m hoping (on some level) will happen is that my wife will be offered her autopsy assistant job full time, making a moderate wage and providing the family with health insurance. With that income cushion and with our current money in the bank, I just might be able to pull off my initial “ramp” to profitability. Scary/exciting! I’d really rather do this the steady & safe way, but it looks like that might not happen.
