My startup business is gathering steam. I can feel it turning from a dream into reality. Know what I mean? The cusp is right now, the business is half dream and half reality. It is an incredible place to be.
In the last couple weeks, we have:
- Gotten the press set up.
- Registered as an Oregon LLC.
- Gotten a federal tax ID (EIN).
- Filed for exemption from county taxes.
- Set up accounting, and balanced all transactions from the start of the year to now.
- Opened a business bank account, ending all commingling of funds.
- Applied for an AmEx Blue card for the business.
It is such an exciting time, and is so interesting. I thought I’d hate all this paperwork, but I’ve chosen to approach it as I do a programming task. These tasks are similar to gathering all the language and framework assets I’d need for a software application. They have picky, fiddly rules which need to be followed exactly. They need to be tracked, and followed-up upon. They need careful consideration. With this attitude, I find myself just ticking things off the todo list every night, rather than becoming frozen with the overwhelming length of the todo list.
I’ve had a lot of "million-dollar ideas" in my life. All of them I’ve let pass by, and some I’ve seen others do and make millions from. This is the first time I’ve ever really tried to bring a business from a dream to reality. I’m having a blast. Why did I wait so long?

The business will make and sell printed children’s clothing. T-shirts and such are hot, but the market is very crowded. This niche is comparatively open.
