New possessions of note – May

In the tradition of the Virtual Coffee Table posts I’ve been making, I think I’ll start sharing about significant new possessions entering or leaving my life. For the moment, I’m picking $100 as the cutoff for a single item to be marked “significant”. Before we started the budget last year, $100 was the cutoff amount between “spend at will” and “talk to my spouse.”

Entering

This month was much bigger than normal. We got two MacBook Pros ($2000 and $2700) and an outstanding Brenthaven laptop bag ($100) for mine. Luckily, the more expensive laptop and the bag were purchased by my new employer.

Leaving

One of the 65 books I sold on Amazon this month went for over $100. Sadly, we also said farewell to my wife’s old Powerbook G3. It was dying for some time, and is now fully replaced with the MacBook Pro.

  • That is great to see you are a Mac person. A little over a year ago I purchased a Mac Powerbook G4 to replace a PC. My first computer was actually a MAC in the early 90′s but I have owned a Dell among other PC’s for awhile. The Powerbook is just amazing in every way. I am a full fledged Mac guy now.

Have you seen all the adds Mac is doing now? They seem to be opening a lot of Apples stores in my neck of the woods, Southern California. I think they are taking advantage of the Ipod craze to remind people they also have some fairly cool computers as well.

  • Is the more expensive one a 17-incher? If so, does the Brenthaven bag work well with it? My biggest concern about getting the big’un is that I’ll have a hard time finding a way to tote it around.

By PBG4 is in for service right now (still under AppleCare, thankfully) and I am starting to get the itch for a MacBook Pro.

  • No, they asked if I wanted a 17″ one, but I said no. Too awkward for me. On a plane, I’d like to be able to use it without having to peer under the slightly bent screen.

For the 17″, I’d definitely go with the Tom Bihn Brain Cell (hardside protection, like the Brenthaven) inside of the excellent “Empire Builder” bag (which is designed to fit it). Here’s a link to the proper sized brain-cell. http://www.tombihn.com/page/001/PROD/300/TB0300
