Every month, I talk about my major purchases or losses for the last month. I don’t do this to brag, or at least I hope it doesn’t come off that way, instead I do it to keep myself conscious of my larger buying choices, and to share my thinking about how I chose as I did.
Outgoing
This month, my old digital camera bit the dust. So long and good riddance, Kodak DX4900 4 MP camera. You were too slow and too bulky.

The Digital camera pictured above. I was taking pictures for eBay listings when my old camera bit the dust. Its lens wouldn’t come out of its closed position any more. I whacked it a few times and it came out, but then it wouldn’t return. Ah well. I’d been saving for a year to buy a new camera. Every month, I put aside a portion of my “pocket money” allowance into a bag in the house safe marked “Bruce’s Mad Money.” I’d managed to save up $350, which was just enough to buy myself a wonderful Casio Exilim Z1000, 10.1 megapixel camera. It is very very fast to take shots, less than 1 second from power on, and it is quite small, 3.5" x 2.5" x.9". Despite the pocket size, its video screen is much larger than the old Kodak camera.
The Casio Exilim line was already on my short-list, along with the Olympus Stylus line and the Sony Cybershots. In fact, I was making my final choices when I saw that the new 10 megapixel camera had been released. Plus, it was on sale at Circuit City for just $347. Wow, I scooped that up immediately. At that price, the camera was clearly the best deal available for under $600 anywhere.
I’m extraordinarily pleased with this camera. It has revitalized my interest in photography, since I can so easily bring it with me in my pocket. That and the fact that it takes simply outstanding shots. Today, while listing several items on eBay, I was happy to discover that it has a built-in eBay “best shot” mode.
I’ve read this described as "The King of the Mini Tillers", and that it is. I’ve been wanting a roto-tiller for years, since we have a half-acre of yard. I dislike grass, having mowed far too much in my youth, so I’ve been wanting to convert a lot of our yard to garden. Last year I hand-dug a 30′x20′ garden, which took me two weekends of backbreaking effort. This year I simply didn’t have the time, and I had the money set aside in my "Freedom Account" for house & grounds. So, I did some reasearch, and I ended up getting a Honda Harmony FG100 Mini Tiller.
Wow! That thing is simply great. It is very light, about 30 pounds, but it spins so fast that it cuts sod without breaking a sweat. It tills deep into the soil, mixing in amendments faster than I thought was possible. I am not a "raver" usually, but the powerful little thing tilled my entire garden, and extended it in just a couple hours. Then, I tilled a new section of the lawn into a sunflower garden for my daughter, since I wasn’t really tired.
I loaned the mighty machine to a friend this weekend and he did his entire yard, front and back. He was tired but smiling when I saw him tonight.
